Mayors Youth Council

What's it All About?

The Sioux Falls Mayor's Youth Council provides youth in the area with alternatives to destructive decisions.

The Mayor's Youth Council began in an effort between Mayor Munson of Sioux Falls and Sioux Falls Promise in 2003 as an effort to give students a voice in the community and to provide drug free events for youth.

When Sioux Falls Promise closed their doors in January of 2004, the Multicultural Center in Sioux Falls offered to assist the Mayor's Youth Council.  They gave the council members a place to meet and assisted them with organizing events.

In 2004, Prairie View Prevention Services received the funding for the Mayor's Youth Council.  Throughout this time, Mayor Munson and the City of Sioux Falls funded the Mayor's Youth Council.  In the fall of 2004, Prairie View Prevention Services was awarded a Drug Free Communities Grant to help fund the Mayor's Youth Council.  The Council has now grown to serve all youth in Minnehaha and Lincoln Counties in South Dakota.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Mayor's Youth Council, please send us an email  and we will send you an application.  Members are generally chosen once a year in the fall.  Any high school student in Minnehaha and Lincoln County may be involved.
